The Fruit of the Spirit - Kindness

Updated: May 5, 2022

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.—Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV)

Are we showing kindness in these challenging times? We are all in this together, and no one is exempt from what is going on in the world today. Kindness can be a powerful force in a world where people are being neglected, rejected, depressed, and fearful of the unknown. Showing a little kindness can heal a wounded heart, and bring hope to the hopeless.

The world wants to be treated kindly, but have a hard time doing the same thing. Kindness is something that should start from home. There are also some that think kindness is weakness, but kindness is caring, and being compassionate toward others. By showing kindness quietly, we become sensitive to other's needs. It also requires humility, not expecting anything in return—this is genuine kindness, lending a helping hand because it is the right thing to do and choosing to do what is best for those around us.

The world says: “Be kind to animals,” but God expects us to be kind to each other. Are we not worth more to God? We should therefore look for ways and opportunities to show kindness. Some shows kindness in saying ‘good morning’, being nice, getting along with, or holding the door open for others. But Biblical kindness is an action, i.e. words of encouragement, comfort, a compliment, sometimes even loving words of correction (Philippians 2:3-4). Sadly, we may say we love each other, but our actions or words show something different.

Kindness is also sacrificing ‘self’, the act of generosity of giving our time. I know it is not easy to show kindness to someone who is irritating or difficult, or interacting with the stranger who is not dressed how we think they should. It is the same kindness shown by the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37, who went into action toward the underserved. Why? Because he not only thought about it, he got involved when no one else would, just like God who shows us kindness every day. As we look around us let’s look for opportunities to show kindness, with compassion and love, giving where we can, encouraging, extending mercy, and words of kindness. Christ says our love for Him is when we show kindness to others, following His footsteps. Some of the greatest Bible examples of kindness include: King David toward Mephibosheth (2 Sam 9), the Shunammite woman and her husband shown to Elisha (2 Kings 4:8-9), and Barnabas (Acts 2:36). Let’s challenge ourselves to show the fruit of kindness.
