Setting Goals for the New Year

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me— Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)

As we look forward to the New Year, did we stop and think how much pain and suffering (physically, emotionally, financially, etc.) we have endured by living in the past?

For the coming New Year, let us commit ourselves to looking forward, and reflecting on the things of the past as an opportunities to adjust our goals and move forward. The Apostle Paul in Philippians 3 describes in athletic terms, setting his eyes on the race ahead, and straining forward in order to reach his ultimate goal of heaven itself. As you reflect on this past year, what adjustments can and will you make in order to move ahead in the New Year?

We can reflect on past goals (looking behind), but we cannot dwell (or live) in the past. This doesn’t guarantee that the year ahead will be easy, but we should still set realistic and achievable goals in order to grow.

Things to help look ahead and set goals in the New Year:

1) Always remember that life is not a sprint, rather a marathon, in other words, a long-term thing.

2) You will only win the race if you look forward to Jesus (cf. Heb. 12:1-2). Have you fixed your eyes on Jesus this past year? If not, why not?

3) You have to believe the future is brighter than your past.

The attitude of moving ahead, is the attitude of a runner, not constantly looking over his shoulder or quitting, rather, straining forward with all his might to fix his eyes ahead, and move towards the goal (finish line), cf. 1 Cor. 9:24-25. Finally, do your goals line up with God’s?
