How Firm Is Your Foundation?

Updated: May 5, 2022

if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard.—Colossians 1:23 (NKJV)

Just as it is important ‘how’ we build, ‘where’ we build is even more important. That’s why Jesus likened the one “who built his house on the rock…a wise man” (Matthew 7:24). So that ‘when,’ “the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not not fall, for it was founded on the rock” (Matt. 7:25). Likewise, the opposite is also true, Jesus said the one “….who hears these sayings…and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:” (Matt. 7:26). Both men heard Jesus’ sayings, however the wise put it into practice, but the foolish man did not. The point is that when we build our lives on a sandy foundation, such as: our reputation, wealth, status, education, etc. these things cannot, and will not keep us secure through the storms of life.

Therefore, we will be better able to stand during the storms of life ‘if’ we hear the Words of God, and build on the rock. Jesus is that Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4), which our foundation must be built upon. If we trust Him as that firm foundation [in everything], He tells us we will have assurance that no matter what life brings our way, no matter how fierce the storms, He will give us the strength to get through (Psalm 62:2).

How firm is your foundation in these challenging times? Have you become frustrated, or beaten down by financial problems, death all around the world, job losses, family troubles, political unrest, anxiety or depression? We can rest in the knowledge that God knows all these things (Psalm 147:5). But we are all human, and life can still become challenging.

I do not know the specific trial(s) you may be going through, or what you are facing , but what I do know is that Jesus said: “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16: 33). Therefore, we can stand secure, having our rock solid foundation in Jesus. He will give us the strength because on our own we will never get through these challenging times without Him. We must continue to daily dig deep into His Word, so that when challenges come we can stand on the firm foundation in the midst of the storm.
