God Understands Our Weariness

Updated: May 5, 2022

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will need permit the righteous to be moved.—Psalm 55:22 (ESV)

Do you wake up somedays feeling tried, weary, frustrated and overwhelmed? In that moment you may look to other things to make you feel better. I know I surely do at times. There is no magic pill to take that feeling away, and there is no mistake that life has its ups and downs, and some days are just a little harder than others. It can simply be a lot of little things that we often beat ourselves up over, or make us feel guilty because we feel that way, and cause us to think ‘what is wrong with me?’ Our minds can become so clouded, that we can not find the words to pray.

When we are feeling that way, we need to know it’s okay, that it doesn’t mean we are a failure, or that something is wrong because we feel that way, because God understands and knows we get weary sometimes. He encourages us to come to Him, and promises to give us rest. If we turn to Him and lean on Him, God promises to provide strength for our weariness (Matthew 11:28-29).

The weariness that we go through is “nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9), it was the same for so many in the Old Testament. For example, God gave the prophet Elijah what he needed when he was feeling weary and sorry for himself after defeating the false prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). God did not beat him down, but instead allowed him to rest under a broom tree, then sent an angel to wake him in order to feed him, afterwards he want back to sleep, then the angel woke him a second time when he was ready to continue his mission for God (1 Kings 19:1-8).

Elijah had a negative opinion about himself becoming afraid of failure and wanted to die, He told God “it is enough” (1 Kings 19:4). Do we feel discouraged and weary somedays, not having things go the way we want? There will be some days that we can feel just like Joshua charging forward with boldness when the walls of Jericho fell down, and there will be somedays we may feel like Elijah, weary and not feeling good about ourselves.

No matter who you are, or how spiritual you are, none of us is immune to life’s ups and downs. God has blessed us with one another to lift one another up, and to help in those times of weariness because we are all in this together. ”The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him. In those who hope in His mercy" (Psalm 147:11).
