God Uses Storms to Get Our Attention

For His anger endureth for a moment, in His favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning—Psalm 30:5 (KJV)

There are times where God will allow storms into our lives in order to get our attention, and at times He will take drastic measures to get it because we are often distracted by other things. Our God wants our attention because He wants to do so much for us, so He may have to give us a storm in order to give us a future of hope.

God commanded the prophet Jonah to deliver a life saving message of repentance to the people of Nineveh, but Jonah had other plans, so God took drastic measures in order to get Jonah’s attention by using a storm among other things (Jonah 1:1-12). Is that the same for us today? I know I have been there. It is easy for us to think our way is better than God’s. There can also be times when we can become disconnected from the affects of our disobedience, and become blind to the real cause of our troubles, or blame them on everyone else except ourselves.

He disciplines us out of His love for us, and not out of anger. Likewise, parents should do the same in disciplining their children if we love them (Hebrews 12:5-8). God does not create every storm in our lives, some are the result of our own disobedience. However, God will sometimes allow us to suffer in order to bring us closer to Him, to fully depend on Him, and not others. He will at times disrupt our plans, forcing us to slow down and focus more on Him.

It may not be an on the road to Damascus like experience of Saul of Tarsus in Acts 9:1-9 where God knocked him down with temporary blindness for 3 days, until he finally was able to see (spiritually) that God wanted him to be a preacher, and not a persecutor of people. But Saul (like us) thought he was doing the right thing until God got his attention.

Know this, when we are disobedient God will EXPOSE us. If this does not grab our attention, and cause us to turn to Him, then nothing will. On the other hand, not every trail we face is a result of our disobedience, but with prayer to God, He will show us and reveal what we need to do. (James 1:5)

We have all been disobedient to God at some point, and do things our way, but when we do, God does not give up on us. We need to pray during these times for God to give us wisdom to discern, understanding and direction. So the next time you are struggling through a storm, and trying to find your way, maybe God is trying to get your attention.
