Where Is Our Focus?

Updated: May 5, 2022

Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your feet from evil.—Proverbs 4:25-27 (NKJV)

Are you having a hard time focusing on the things that really matter these days? Is focusing on the Lord a struggle for you? With everything going on around us, which includes the loss of jobs, financial struggles, loss of love ones, concerns about the vaccine, whether it is safe to go back to the office, or lockdown concerns, these things can certainly cause us to lose our focus.

All of these distractions can pull us away from the things which are really important, and draw our hearts away from God. The truth is that it can be hard to focus when the world seems so upside down. It can cause us to become more negative, and loose the hope we have in Christ. There is nothing wrong with being concerned about our community, or the demands of family, however, if we would just focus on God we would understand that these things are just so little compared to Him. The Apostle Paul reminds us to: “Set [focus] your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2). Because God has given us life to enjoy, and we are free to enjoy and have wholesome interests. But our minds can become clouded and our vision blurred when we dwell on the things of the present world.

When we examine the life of Noah (Genesis 6), we see an example of someone who stayed focused on God. He stood alone and obeyed, he was given a specific job to build an ark in order to prepare for a flood, which required his constant focus and attention, having never seen rain before. It did not matter how long it took, he was obedient to God, and he was not distracted by the pull of the world, or the people who laughed and mocked him. Some probably thought he was crazy, but he had faith in God enough to obey and stayed focused. Often times of stress can cause us to look beyond our own strength in order to fully focus and rely on God.

We too should be focused like Noah, and trust God, which will mean doing things that the world won’t understand. Though our circumstances will constantly change, we must remain focused and fully trust in God.
